Rich Gilson and his wife Suzanne bought a small 100 year old cottage in Wildwood 4 years ago. They've been doing renovations to bring the home up to date. Those renovations included raising the house and putting in a new foundation. While Rich Gilson was using a small excavator to remove the demolished old foundation he came across what he first thought were weeds or old cigars. So he just tossed them to the side. Then it rained on Saturday. Which exposed the rubber bands around what he had tossed aside the day before. After taking a second look Gilson saw it was rolled up 10 and 20 dollar bills. There were two of them. The total amount of cash was around $1000. All of the bills date back to 1934. No one knows how the money got there. The area were the rolls of cash were found was in a crawl space under the home's old porch. Gilson said he thinks the money was tied to "illegal activity" of some kind. However, at the time the money was hidden the United States was in the middle of The Great Depression. Hundreds of banks had failed and customers of those banks lost everything. Maybe the money was there because the person it belonged to just didn't trust banks. Gilson plans to keep the money. Hopefully, with a little research we can find out more about who might have hidden it there.
