Spotted Lantern Flies are swarming across New Jersey

In spite of the fact that we're supposed to kill them when we see them. Spotted Lantern Flies appear to be gaining ground in New Jersey and several other states including New York and Pennsylvania. Recent video and pictures show them swarming and crashing into the upper floors of tall buildings in Jersey City and Bayonne. Then falling to the sidewalk by the hundreds. They've also been seen in significant numbers at the Jersey Shore this year. So they're not just in the woods in rural parts of the state anymore.

Spotted Lantern Flies are an invasive insect that originates in Northern China and Vietnam. The colorful bugs are can cause serious damage to native trees and shrubs according to experts at Rutgers University. They say Maple Trees, Black Walnut Trees, Willow Trees and Grape Vines are especially vulnerable.
