Huge power outage disrupts Sussex County and the New Jersey State Fair

Like many others I planned to be at the New Jersey State Fair yesterday to take my grand children on some rides and host the WSUS Kids Games. When I got to the gate no one was being allowed to go in. The fair goers who got in before the power outage were allowed to stay. If you got there while the power was out. You could not get in. When I spoke to J.C.P and L on my phone from the parking lot. They told me the "estimated" time for the power to come back on was 6 o'clock. Which was too late to take advantage of the fair's $25 carnival wristband deal and too late to set up and start the Kid's Games. The good news for any one who wanted to take advantage of the $25 wrist band deal is you can still ride all the rides for 25 bucks today and tomorrow. Our WSUS Kids Games have been rescheduled for Thursday at 6.

So what caused the huge power outage in Sussex and Morris County yesterday afternoon? J.C.P. and L says it was a downed high voltage line along route 80 in Morris County. There was also a brush fire nearby. It is unclear if the brush fire caused the power line to come down or if the downed power line caused the brush fire. As of 5PM yesterday the fire was out. Power was restored before 6PM in the Augusta area including the fairgrounds and Skylands Stadium. At the height of the power outage more than 62,000 customers had no power according to J.C.P. and L. As of this morning that number is down to just over 250 in Sussex County.
