A 40 year old woman was rescued after spending 6 hours in very cold conditions in the Bashakill Wildlife Area in Wurtsboro, New York. She was alone in her kayak and got lost in very foggy conditions. Then she discovered her cell phone died. Orange County rescue teams searched several hours. Finally, at 1 o'clock in the morning the woman was found safe but suffering from hypothermia. She is expected to make a full recovery.
I've hiked in the Bashakill Wildlife Area with my oldest son several times. It is very beautiful and pretty remote. It's an abandoned rail bed converted to a trail that runs along a large swamp area. The wildlife is abundant. When it gets dark it's not a good place to be.
