This is an almost unbelievable story. "Bear" a Leonberger Bernese puppy got loose from his owners in Manhattan on Saturday and was rescued on the other side of the Hudson River early Tuesday morning. The Wolpin Family had just purchased "Bear" with plans to train him as a service dog for their 20 year old disabled son. The puppy seemed to be very frightened by city life. He wouldn't even leave the apartment. Then on Saturday the Wolpins took him to a park near 80th street n Manhattan. Where he was able to break free from his collar and avoid several people in the park. Who were trying to recapture him. Bear was last seen leaping into the Hudson River. His owners had pretty much given up hope they would ever see him again by Monday.
Then early Tuesday Morning the Edgewater Fire Company was called to a pier at Independence Harbor. Where they rescued the exhausted and thirsty puppy. Who managed to survive the more than half mile trip across the Hudson River. A few hours later Edgewater Police contacted the Wolpins thanks to Bear's microchip.
