Just before Christmas New Jersey State Police from the Augusta Barracks began a search at Stokes State Forrest for a man reported missing. His family had not heard from him for more than 24 hours. He had entered the heavily wooded forest on an ultra terrain vehicle. Temperatures in the area were bitter cold. The troopers found the man's UTV after searching deep into the forest. They followed his foot steps and discovered him lying face up without one of his boots and next to his walking stick. He was suffering from severe hypothermia. Troopers on the scene covered him with their own heavy coats and even took turns lying on top of him to transfer their body heat. The Sandyston Fire Department soon arrived to help get the man airlifted to a local hospital. He is now recovering at home.
