Why we're seeing those mile long double stack trains in Sussex County

This past weekend I started seeing social media posts in Franklin and Sparta showing videos of very long double stacked trains passing though our area. Railroad enthusiasts have been heading out to watch the trains pass through from Campbell Hall in Orange County, New York all the way to Ridgefield Park in Bergen County. Monday afternoon I started looking into what was going on. I reached out to former Sussex County Commissioner and local historian Phil Crabb to find out. Phil explained that intermodal cross country trains are being diverted though our area temporarily because of a major train derailment on the Ohio Pennsylvania border. The derailment in East Palestine, Ohio has lead to the evacuation of thousands of people because of potentially dangerous gasses leaking from tanker cars. Officials with the Norfolk Southern Railroad don't release train schedules for security reasons. However, until the derailed tanker cars are cleared and tracks are repaired in East Palestine. We can expect to see those mile and a half long double stacked trains on the old Susquehanna Line tracks in Sussex County and along Route 23 south of Sussex County. If you love trains like I do. Enjoy this return to the "old days" while we have it.
