Volunteers with the State Department of Environmental Protection are watching 12 Bald Eagle nests in Sussex County. Recently the observers reported 8 of those 12 nests produced two young eagles each. That's a total of 16 new eaglets in Sussex County. Which will hopefully find mates and add to the eagle population. It should come as no surprise that Sussex County has the most eagle nests in Northern New Jersey. Southwest New Jersey along the Delaware River still has the most Bald Eagles in the state. Statewide there are 267 known nests. Not all of them produced young this past year. Observers are sure 197 of those nests produced at least one young eaglet. Bald Eagles can live up to 25 years in the wild. They usually return to where they were raised to breed every year.
