National Park Service steps up life jacket awareness along the Delaware

This is the first time I'm sharing this with my radio listener family. A few weeks ago I went tubing along the Salt River in Arizona. No one in the river was wearing a life jacket. The state park rangers in Arizona didn't seem to be encouraging it. So I got in my tube and headed down the river without one. In most place the river was shallow but the rapids were very swift. At one point I was swept off to the side and found myself hanging on to my tube for dear life. The water was up to my neck and no one heard my cries for help. I managed to get my feet onto a rock and back into the tube after struggling for a while. It was terrifying.

Closer to home the National Park Service and local first responders have been urging everyone who enters the Upper Delaware River to put on a life jacket for years. This year they've added billboards along PA Route 652 and NY Route 97. The first drowning this year happened Mother's Day weekend near Barryville, New York. The victim was a camper who was not wearing his life jacket.
