New Jersey DEP says black bear complaints are way down in 2023

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's latest report shows black bear complaints are way down in Northwest New Jersey. Even in Sussex County which usually sees the most complaints every year. So far this year there have been 184 calls about bears in Sussex County. That's down from 284 in 2022. There have been similar decreases in Warren, Passaic and Morris Counties. In Passaic calls went from 41 last year to 23 this year. In Warren County there were 139 calls in 2022 and 87 so far in 2023.

Experts say there are several reasons bear-human contacts are down. The mild winter means bears are not as hungry and don't have to range as far to find food. The recent bear hunts have also decreased their population.
