On Christmas Eve 1984 two young boys fishing at a park in Mendham discovered the body of a new born baby girl. Her umbilical cord was still attached. She was wrapped in a towel in a plastic bag. Morris County officials named her "Baby Mary." She was left in the park alive but died from hypothermia and exposure. At a press conference yesterday Morris County Prosecutor Robert Carroll announced the 38 year old cold case has been solved. The mother of "Baby Mary" was only 17 at the time. She's been charged with manslaughter as a juvenile. So her identity will not be released. Now in her 50's. She is living in South Carolina and is facing up to three years in jail.
The father of "Baby Mary" is now also known. He died back in 2009 and never knew the new born was his daughter. Baby Mary was buried in St Joseph's Church Cemetery in Mendham.
