Times Square was packed last night but it looked like people in Hackettstown were having just as much fun much closer to home. At midnight a giant M and M was lowered from a very high fire engine ladder to celebrate the New Year. The idea of bringing the community together started this spring and it all came together thanks to several local businesses, community leaders and the Hackettstown Police Department. A video posted on the police department Facebook page showed a crowded downtown Hackettstown at midnight. Everyone was having a good time and the giant red M and M was lowered without a hitch. Officials hope this will become an annual tradition just like Hammonton's New Year's Blueberry drop. M and M Mars has been producing M and M's and other sweet treats in Hackettstown since 1958. The Hackettstown facility became the company's U.S. headquarters in 2020.
