The only Mets player who was part of both World Series teams has passed

New York Mets owner Steve Cohen shared some very sad news yesterday afternoon. Bud Harrelson has passed away at 79. He was the starting shortstop on the Mets World Series winning team in 1969 and pennant winning team in 1973. He was known for his slick fielding and scrappy play. During the 1973 playoffs he did not back down from a much bigger Pete Rose after the Reds outfielder's vicious slide attempting to break up a double play. Their altercation lead to a bench clearing brawl.

Harrelson joined the Mets in 1965 and played for 13 seasons before he was traded to the Phillies. He was an All Star in 1970 and 1971. He won a Gold Glove for his fielding several times. In 1986 he was the Mets third base coach when they won their second World Series. I'll always remember him jumping and waving Ray Knight in to score the winning run in game 6. Long time fans recall Bud was also Tom Seaver's room mate when the Mets were on the road. He was 79.
