I'm old enough to remember the first "fleet week." It wasn't called fleet week in 1976 it was called "Operation Sail." A celebration of our country's 200th birthday on July 4th 1976. My dad lived on Boulevard East in North Bergen. We could step out of his apartment and have an unobstructed view of the Hudson River. Seeing the historic sailing ships along side our U.S. Navy Ships was thrilling. Especially when President Ford came down the Hudson on a huge aircraft carrier.
Today we have "Fleet Week" which is even bigger and better. Fleet Week in New York City started yesterday with the "Parade of Ships" past the Statue of Liberty. Fleet Week events will continue today through Memorial Day. You can tour several U.S. Navy Ships. Enjoy free concerts from Navy, Marine and Coast Guard Bands in Times Square. At Liberty State Park in Jersey City there's a full schedule of events too.
I would love to be there. I hope you get a chance to check this out. If not this year maybe one year in the future.
