The last couple of months have not been so good for New Jersey Transit Rail Services. The latest problem happened last week when commuters on a New Jersey bound train from Penn Station got stuck in a tunnel under the Hudson River for almost 3 hours. NJ Transit officials say power went out in the tunnel around 7:20 PM on July 31st. Amtrak and NJ Transit officials differ on the reason it took so long for passengers to be rescued.
What we do know is power was restored to the tunnel after about 30 minutes. Even after power was restored the train could not move. There was concern about wires in the tunnel being down. So New Jersey Transit had to confirm the tunnel was safe before Amtrak could send in a locomotive to connect to the stranded train. The first engine dispatched wasn't strong enough to move the train. So a second engine had to be dispatched to the tunnel. Before the second locomotive could connect to the train the first locomotive had to be disconnected. Finally, by 10PM the second locomotive was able to bring the train back to Penn Station. Several passengers had to be treated at the scene for panic attacks and other medical issues when the train arrived.
