Before vaccinations were discovered Whooping Cough killed many children in the United States and around the world. I remember my dad telling me about one of his childhood friends dying from the highly contagious bacterial infection in the 1930's. Today most children are vaccinated against Whooping Cough at a very young age. New Jersey State law requires children to have the Whooping Cough Vaccine by the time they enter 6th grade. Adults can also get a Whooping Cough Booster shot. Which is advisable if an older adult is around very young children. I got mine a few years ago after my grand daughter was born. Year over year cases of Whooping Cough across all age categories have doubled. So far this year more than 400 cases have been reported in New Jersey. Health Officials in neighboring states are reporting even greater rises in cases. The serious increases in cases is happening across all age categories including unvaccinated infants, school age children and adults, Whooping Cough gets its name from the whooping sound those who have the infection make when they struggle to breathe.
