I grew up in North Bergen, New Jersey in the 70's. Our apartment was 5 5 minute drive from the lower Hudson River. When I was in high school we would drive to Interstate Park right under the George Washington Bridge for cookouts. The park had a beach but going in the water was unthinkable. Back then the Hudson was pretty filthy. Efforts to clean up the river were just getting started. It's been more than 50 years since New York State has considered any kind of seafood caught in the lower Hudson safe for humans to eat. PCB levels in all fish species were considered dangerous. It's taken years to get to where we are today. This week the New York State Department of Health announced a partial victory. Easing restrictions on certain species of fish caught in the lower Hudson. It is now safe to eat a limited amount of striped bass each month. The general population can eat up to four 8 ounce servings per month. Pregnant women and kids under 15 can have one 8 ounce serving. The health department still says eating carp and small mouth bass is not a good idea.
