Sussex County Freeholders continue legal battle with Attorney General

State Attorney General Gurbir Grewal's "sanctuary policy" forbids local law enforcement officials from helping federal immigration officials in New Jersey. Per Grewal's policy local law enforcement cannot act on civil immigration holds or warrants. Local law enforcement can only respond when an undocumented immigrant commits a crime specific to New Jersey. Under Grewal's "sanctuary policy" undocumented immigrants who have violated Federal immigration laws cannot be arrested or detained by New Jersey law enforcement. In direct opposition to the Attorney General. The Sussex County Freeholders voted unanimously to place a question on the ballot that would "order" sheriff Mike Strada to assist federal immigration officials. Grewal says the question is illegal because even if Sussex County voters approve it. His "sanctuary policy" forbids Strada from taking action. This week the Sussex County Freeholders hired the law firm of Florio, Perucci, Steinhardt and Cappelli to push back against Grewal's opposition to the referendum. Former Democratic Governor Jim Florio is a partner in that firm.
