Port Authority tolls are going up

Starting in January it's going to cost you an extra buck to use the George Washington Bridge, Lincoln or Holland Tunnel. If you have E-Z Pass it's going to cost you more too. The cash toll at the Hudson River Crossings is going up to $16.00. E-Z pass users will now pay $14.00 during peak times and $12.00 off peak. The increase was blamed on inflation, cost of security and the need to spend more money on capital improvements. The vote to increase tolls was unanimous. Governor Murphy and Governor Cuomo have the power to veto the toll increase but they are not expected to do it. When my daughter lived on Long Island I paid tolls for the George Washington Bridge and Throgs Neck Bridge when I went to see her. I would look at all the vehicles going over these bridges and wonder where is all that money going? Since the World Trade Center attacks it's understandable security costs would increase. Just how much tolls have increased might surprise you. Since 2001 tolls at the Hudson River Crossings have increased from $6.00 to $16.00. Up until 1970 the toll both ways was $1.00. Although politicians won't say it. High tolls are designed to encourage commuters to use mass transit. Part of the money collected from drivers will go towards a 32 Billion Dollar capital improvement plan for the Newark Airport's monorail, Terminal 2 and to PATH Trains. See what I mean. After years of using the GWB on my way to Long Island I was surprised to discover the toll on another bridge that crosses the same river further north is only $5.00. The Mario Cuomo Bridge (formerly the Tappan Zee Bridge) is run by the New York State Thruway Authority. This should give you an idea of how much of the tolls we pay to the Port Authority winds up going elsewhere.
