Today is National Cat Day

Cats and humans have been together for over 12 thousand years. While dogs helped humans hunt cats were helping to keep rodents away from our grain. We needed them and they needed us. Today cats are the most popular house pet in the United States. I've had cats my whole life. Over one third of all families in the United State share their lives with at least one cat. My first cat "Thomasina" lived 21 years. The one difference I've noticed between cats and dogs is that cats have more variable personalities. While almost all dogs crave attention, many cats seem aloof. I think it's because cats tend to bond with only one or two people. When you're a cat's human they make sure you know it. So they're not as aloof as non cat people think. Many years ago I took in an old feral cat and named him "Mugsy." Everyday when I came home from work he would lay next to me on the couch for hours. About 20 years ago my son found a tiny new born kitten by the curb. My wife and I used an eye dropper to feed him and he slept with a heating pad in our clothes hamper. We didn't think "Stockings" would survive. He lived for 17 years. He loved all humans, especially Denise and me. Stockings was my favorite cat. Here are some interesting cat facts: 1) There are over 500 million cats in the world. 2) A group of cats is called a "clowder." 3) Cats are lethal hunters. 4) When they walk their back paws step in almost the exact same place as their front paws. Which keeps noise to a minimum. 5) Cats can see at light levels 6 times lower than humans too.
