On Black Friday my friend Jan at Ideal Farm and Garden was selling beautiful Christmas Trees for about $40.00. Even now a beautiful "you cut" Christmas Tree will cost around $50.00 in our area. Are you sitting down? This year if you want to have a real Christmas Tree in New York City the price could be thousands of dollars. According to a story in the New York Post live Christmas Tree sellers in the city for as high as $6,500.00. Fraser Firs are the most expensive Christmas Trees because farmers didn't plant enough of them back in 2008. The laws of supply and demand are alive and well. Other Christmas Trees are selling for between $850.00 and $2,000.00. Despite the crazy prices, live Christmas Trees are selling out. People in Manhattan's richer neighborhoods who are desperate for a live Christmas Tree will pay those prices. In spite of the huge price tag, owners of office and penthouses have already bought every 20 foot Fraser Fir Tree available. At least the high price tag does include delivery and installation. USA Today says the average price for a live tree in other parts of the country is around $78.00. It sounds to me like folks in New York City should be taking a trip to Sussex County to buy their Christmas Trees. Even if they have to rent a small truck to do it!
