It's pretty safe to say a ban paper and plastic shopping bags is coming to New Jersey. It's just a matter of working out a few details. A bill that would ban all single use shopping bags and Styrofoam containers in two years did pass in the New Jersey State Senate yesterday. The state assembly will take up the proposal during the next legislative session. The bill that passed in the state senate yesterday would also require plastic straws only be given to restaurant customers when requested. However, Governor Murphy and a majority of state assembly members are pushing for the ban to take effect sooner. Senate President Steve Sweeney says the senate bill is: "A reasonable compromise giving everyone two years to get in line."
