Port Jervis Police Charge 22-year-old Mother with Newborn's Death

Port Jervis Police have charged a 22-year-old mother with with the death of her newborn baby. According to the RecordOnline.com, Nicole H. Layman allegedly concealed her pregnancy, gave birth to her baby prematurely, and left the newborn outside in freezing temperatures, where she died of exposure.

The baby, named Sophia Grace Hadden, was found on November 12 between Hornbeck Avenue and Brooklyn Street, unclothed with the umbilical cord still attached.

Layman has reportedly been charged with a section of second-degree murder that alleges she recklessly engaged in or created grave risk of serious physical injury that led to the death of someone younger than 11 years old. She's facing a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in state prison, according to the Port Jervis Police Department.
