When you work on the air in radio and T.V. there's no such thing as getting off for a "snow day." Going into work when it's snowing is something you learn to plan ahead for. My first winter in Sussex County was the winter of 1983/84. I don't remember much about specific days or snow totals. What I do remember is sleeping on the floor of the program director's office because there was too much snow coming to drive home in my tiny chevy chevette. I packed a change of clothes and brought a sleeping bag the day before. Over the past 30 plus year's we've had some memorable March and April snowstorms since I've been on the air in Sussex County. The one that will always stand out is the April Fool's Day storm of 1997. That morning timing was everything. By the time 10 o'clock came around I was exhausted and no one else could make it into work. Our morning news guy and me held down the fort at the radio station until the snow stopped at 3 PM. That day parts of Sussex County got almost 2 feet of snow. More recently there was the nor'easter of March 7th 2018. Once again that morning timing for me was everything. The snow started to fall when I got to WSUS at 4 AM. By the time I could leave at 10 there was almost a foot of snow on the ground in Franklin. I auto started my car but didn't have my windshield wipers turned off. The wipers could not move the heavy snow. One of them broke off and stopped working. On the way out of our parking lot I drove into a snow bank and had to be pulled out. I drove into another snow bank at Minerals Hotel. We had a total of 3 nor'easters that March. According to New Jersey Climatologist David Robinson March was Sussex County's snowiest month for the last 3 winters. The National Weather Service is forecasting daytime temperatures in the 40's for the next week so there's no snow in our immediate future. After that who knows? We did get a major snowstorm on April 6th 1982.
