Lake Hopatcong worker killed harvesting weeds

A weed harvester overturned yesterday morning on Lake Hopatcong killing a 68 year old man. Sussex County Freeholder Sylvia Petillo told the New Jersey Herald Curt Mulch had been employed by the Lake Hopatcong Commission for about 12 years. Petillo went on to say two Hopatcong Borough police officers were the first on the scene. Both of them drove into the water in full uniform in an attempt to save Mr. Mulch. New Jersey State Police divers recovered his body later in the afternoon. The accident took place i the Crescent Cove section of the lake. A weed harvester works like a lawn mower. In shallow sections of Lake Hopatcong the tops of aquatic plants are cut down to keep them under control. The wet vegetation is then lifted onto the weed harvesting boat.
