Governor Murphy has signed legislation that will release more than 2 thousand inmates in New Jersey State Prisons months before their sentences should be over. There have been 54 Covid-19 related deaths in New Jersey Prisons. The number of inmate deaths is 52 and two corrections officers have died from the virus. The early release of prisoners is being justified because it will make prisons less crowded and reduce the chance of the released prisoners getting infected. Adults and juveniles with less than a year left on their sentences can be released 8 months early. Prisoners convicted of aggravated sexual assault, compulsive repetitive sex offenders and prisoners convicted of murder will not be released early. No other state has passed legislation to reduce prison sentences because of Covid-16. The number of state prisoners prosecuted in Sussex County eligible for early release is 16, Morris County is 28 and Warren County is 14. The legislation does not require the newly released prisoners to quarantine for 2 weeks.
