Yesterday two front loaders dug a trench and buried a frozen hump back whale on the beach at Barnegat Light State Park. For several days biologists from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine were hoping to determine what killed the 3 year old whale but they gave up yesterday. Bob Schoelkopf told reporters: "The Whales too frozen, we can't even cut into the blubber." The whale was 31 feet long and weighed 15 tons. The same whale had been photographed earlier this year feeding near Sandy Hook. Too many people were coming to the beach to see the whale. Since it had been dead for over a week the carcass was also causing quite a stench.
