West Milford High School grad finishes service on U.S.S. Constitution

Navy Lt. Travis Leary graduated from West Milford High School in 2008 and a naval academy in 2012 with a Bachelor's Degree in English. He has served in the navy for the past 9 years. Leary just finished a 4 year assignment on the historic U.S.S. Constitution. The oldest commissioned warship afloat is now docked in Boson Harbor. More than 600 Thousand people visit "Old Ironsides" each year. Active duty sailors aboard the U.S.S. Constitution provide free tours, promote naval history, maritime heritage and raise awareness of the importance of having a strong navy. The "Old Ironsides" nickname was given to the U.S.S. Constitution because British cannon balls bounced off her hull during the War of 1812. All navy officers who serve aboard the U.S.S. Constitution must meet a high standard of sustained excellence. Candidates must apply and be interviewed before getting the special assignment. Previously Leary had served at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, aboard the U.S. destroyer Chung-Hoon and nuclear powered aircraft carrier U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford.
