Tropical storm Ida has resulted in 23 deaths in New Jersey. Three police officers in Hopewell Township came very close to being victims themselves after going out on a distress call Wednesday Night. Officer James Hoffman had to abandon his police car after it started to take on water and float away. He removed his vest and climbed through the cars window. As waters rose even higher he found a tree to hold on to. Two other officers sent out to help Hoffman also had to abandon their vehicle as the flood waters washed past them. Both of those officers found trees to hold on to as well. After two hours of frantic searching Mercer County rescue firefighters were able to find all three men. The officers fired their guns to help the firefighters find them. Rescue boats had to be used to get the officers out of the rushing water and on dry land.
