Sussex County is grappling with a sudden drop in temperatures. Today, the region is struggling to reach a high in the mid 50s, a stark contrast to the warmer temperatures experienced in recent weeks.

Early Monday morning, Andover airport recorded a temperature of 40 degrees, the lowest since last spring. The chill was even more pronounced in the Hudson Valley, where temperatures plummeted into the 30s. It was a similar story to our east, where New York City hit a low of 49 degrees Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, cool weather is expected to continue through the week with daytime highs reaching the lower 60s and overnight lows dipping down into the lower 40s. Skies are expected to be partly cloudy to sunny through Thursday when the next chance of showers will arrive.

The cooler weather is accelerating many trees turning to their fall colors and shedding their leaves. According to the New Jersey Forest Service's Fall Foliage Conditions Report from Friday, the region was nearing the mid-point of autumn colors. In 2022, the peak was reached in the 3rd week of October.
