The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced the expansion of its Total Access PATH Payment (TAPP) system, enabling contactless payments at all PATH stations in New Jersey. The tap-and-go payment system, which allows customers to use any contactless credit/debit card or digital wallet at PATH turnstiles, was activated at the Newport station last week.
The TAPP system is now available at all seven stations in New Jersey, as well as the World Trade Center and 33rd Street stations in Manhattan. The remaining New York stations are expected to be enabled by the end of the summer.
Since its launch in December, the TAPP system has been used by over a million riders, with nearly 20,000 transactions recorded on an average weekday. The Port Authority plans to continue supporting SmartLink and MetroCard purchases during the phase-in of the TAPP system and for a substantial period after.
'Bringing a 21st century tap-to-pay fare system to PATH is an important part of our much broader effort to make every element of this century-old railroad convenient and reliable for riders,' said Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton.
