New Jersey Transit riders are facing higher costs starting today as the agency implements a significant fare hike. Despite numerous service disruptions in recent months, the fare increase of 15 percent is now in effect. Additionally, riders can expect fares to rise by an additional three percent annually starting next year.
The fare hike aims to address a substantial budget shortfall that the agency has been grappling with. The financial challenges have been exacerbated by struggling ridership numbers, which currently stand at only 80 percent of pre-COVID levels. This decline in ridership has affected revenue streams, prompting NJ Transit to take measures to close the budget gap.
This increase marks the first fare hike for NJ Transit in nearly a decade. The agency's decision, while necessary for financial stability, has not come without controversy. Many commuters have expressed frustration, particularly given the service disruptions that have plagued the transit system in recent months. These issues have ranged from delays and cancellations to mechanical breakdowns, contributing to a less reliable travel experience for passengers.
NJ Transit officials acknowledge the concerns of their riders but emphasize that the fare hikes are crucial for maintaining and improving the transit system. According to the agency, the additional revenue will be allocated towards essential maintenance and infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing service reliability and overall rider experience.
