The Tri-State area, including Sussex, Warren, Pike, Monroe, and Orange Counties, is under a heat advisory as temperatures are expected to soar above 100 degrees. The National Weather Service issued the advisory, which is in effect until Wednesday night. The hottest day of the week is expected to be today, with temperatures reaching the mid to upper 90s, but the heat index could make it feel like triple digits.

"Heat index values up to 100 degrees expected," the weather service warned, adding that heat-related illnesses significantly increase during periods of extreme heat and high humidity.

In addition to the sweltering heat, there is also a chance of pop-up showers and thunderstorms over the next few days due to the extreme heat and humidity.

Officials are urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid the sun, and keep pets indoors except for short walks in the early part of the day and evening. Relief from the heat is not expected until Thursday when a cold front is forecasted to move in, bringing temperatures back into the 80s through at least Monday.
