A severe thunderstorm that swept across northern New Jersey on Sunday night resulted in widespread flooding and power outages. The storm, which brought heavy rains, led to the closure of parts of the Garden State Parkway in Irvington, Essex County, and left more than 10,000 customers without power at its peak.
The National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the entire state until 10 p.m. on Sunday, and flood watches were posted for 17 New Jersey counties. Thunderstorm and flood warnings were also posted for several counties during the night.
The rapidity of the storm exacerbated the flooding problems, with at least 2 inches of rain predicted for much of the region. Flooding was reported on a number of highways in the region, including Route 3 in Clifton, the Garden State Parkway in East Orange, and Route 23 in Butler, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
In Clifton, flooding was reported along Urma Avenue, adjacent to the Garden State Parkway. In Passaic, sections along Main Avenue, including Tennyson Place, Brook Avenue, and Broadway, and along Passaic Avenue by First Street and Lackawanna were also closed.
The city of Paterson also experienced flash flooding, with roads or portions of roads closed along River Street, Fifth Avenue, Getty and Beckwith avenues, Bridge, Main and Levine streets. In Woodland Park, the parking lots by Kohls and Best Buy were flooding, and portions of Andrew's and Memorial drives, as well as Lackawanna Avenue, were closed.
This latest bout of severe weather comes on the heels of flooding earlier this month associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby.
