A unique rehabilitation facility in Monroe County is currently caring for two beavers. The facility, Wilderz at Pocono Wildlife, located in Stroudsburg, is providing a nurturing environment for the beavers, named Darla and Diver, with the aim of releasing them back into the wild once they are fully healthy.
Darla, who has been on Earth for two months, was found in poor condition and was initially taken to a rehabilitation facility in Massachusetts before being moved to Wilderz. Unfortunately, another beaver that was supposed to be her companion died just days before Darla's arrival. Over the weekend, Diver was brought to Wilderz, where the pair will bond and learn together for the next two years. "They are very family-oriented. They teach each other things. They are very tight-knit family," said Kat Schuster, a Wildlife Rehabilitator at the Wilderz at Pocono Wildlife, according to WFMZ.
During their time at Wilderz, Darla and Diver will learn essential survival skills such as how to build a dam, find food, and store food. The facility is also near completion of a new beaver pen, which provides a pool of renewable water, natural wood safe for beavers, and a veranda for them to observe their surroundings. The pen was funded by donations.
Once Darla and Diver have bonded and learned about their environment, they will be released back into the wild, preferably near a dam, to join a new family of beavers. Until then, they will receive the care they need at Wilderz.
