Residents of Milford are calling for increased traffic safety measures following the tragic death of a local dog named Maya. The dog was hit and killed by a speeding motorist while crossing a Broad Street crosswalk with its owner. The incident has sparked a public outcry, with residents demanding more police presence, additional signage, and a greater commitment from the borough to ensure safer streets.
At a recent borough council meeting, residents shared several near-miss incidents and proposed various safety measures. Suggestions included installing cameras at crosswalks, using reflective paint, improving street lighting, and increasing police presence. Residents also suggested adding a new stop light at the intersection of Sixth Street and Hartford Street, although this would require support from PENNDOT due to Hartford Street being considered a highway. Speed bumps, particularly on Catherine Street, were also proposed.
According to the Pike County Courier, Milford Police have already increased their efforts to curb speeding, issuing 50 citations in August 2024, a significant increase from the 13 citations issued in August 2022.
The tragic incident has sparked a broader conversation about the future of Milford. Residents are questioning whether the borough will remain a pedestrian-friendly village or become more vehicle-oriented due to the growing population in and around the area.
