New Jersey Congressman Josh Gottheimer has announced the introduction of new legislation aimed at protecting ballot boxes and poll workers. The announcement comes in the wake of increasing incidents of violence and harassment at polling sites across the country, including in New Jersey. The proposed legislation, known as the Ballot Box Protection Act, seeks to make the destruction of a ballot box a federal crime, punishable by a $20,000 fine and up to 20 years in prison.

In addition to these penalties, the legislation also calls for the implementation of security plans at polling places, the deployment of additional FBI and Department of Homeland Security resources to polling sites, and the use of federal funds for physical security. Gottheimer emphasized the importance of the right to vote, stating that it is "sacred" and that constituents and poll workers have consistently expressed fear due to the current climate.

The Ballot Box Protection Act is part of Gottheimer's broader "Election Integrity Strategy," which includes a bipartisan "Unity Commitment" that commits members to respect the results of the upcoming 2024 presidential election, attend the Presidential Inauguration, and serve as a voice for calm, regardless of the election outcome.

According to Gottheimer's official website, the congressman is also urging New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, New Jersey Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of State Tahesha Way, and FBI Director Wray and DHS Secretary Mayorkas, to immediately implement FBI and DHS’ Joint Intelligence Bulletin recommendations to protect election workers from harm.
