A technical error has led to some New Jersey residents receiving duplicate ANCHOR property tax relief checks, according to state officials. The error is the latest issue in this year's round of payments, following an earlier incident where many residents saw their payments temporarily reversed while officials investigated potential fraud.

The New Jersey Division of Taxation has asked residents who received duplicate payments to return the extra check without cashing it. The checks can be mailed to the NJ Division of Taxation at P.O. Box 266, Trenton, NJ 08695-0266.

The ANCHOR (Affordable New Jersey Communities for Homeowners and Renters) program, now in its third year, began distributing payments for the 2021 tax year in mid-October. The program provides tax relief to those who owned or rented a primary residence in 2021 and earned $250,000 or less for the year. Eligible residents can receive benefits ranging from $250 to $1,750. For many beneficiaries, the payments were automatic this year. The deadline to apply for the program is December 6th.
