Commuters using the PATH train service faced significant delays during the morning rush hour today due to a reported smoke condition. The lines running between Hoboken and 33rd Street and Journal Square and 33rd Street were temporarily shut down around 6 a.m. for an investigation into the smoke condition at Christopher Street. The service resumed with delays at about 6:40 a.m. after third rail power was restored at Christopher Street. The nature of the smoke condition has not been disclosed.

During the disruption, NJ Transit cross-honored PATH tickets at Hoboken, Newark, Secaucus, and New York Penn Station. Service between Newark and Hoboken and the World Trade Center operated on schedule. The cause of the smoke condition remains unclear. According to NBC New York, the problem started about an hour earlier, but initially only affected Hoboken to 33rd Street service.
