Governor Phil Murphy held meetings this week with federal officials to address the recent drone sightings in New Jersey. The discussions included Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, senior officials from the Department of Homeland Security, New Jersey Homeland Security officials, and the state police. Members of New Jersey's congressional delegation also participated in the meetings.
The drone sightings began in Morris County just before Thanksgiving and have since been reported in Sussex, Somerset, and Warren counties, as well as other areas in North Jersey. Residents have shared their experiences on social media, with several users in a Sparta Facebook group claiming to have seen drones flying through the town on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.
Authorities have not yet determined the origin or intent of the drones. While some sightings may be legitimate, officials caution that others could be misidentified objects or hoaxes. Despite the mystery surrounding the drones, Governor Murphy assured the public that there is no indication of any threat to public safety.
The New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness, along with other agencies, has not provided additional details but encourages residents to report drone sightings to local authorities. The investigation is ongoing, and officials urge the public to remain vigilant. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
