High winds swept across New Jersey on Thursday (December 5), causing significant disruptions, including power outages and flight delays. Wind gusts reached up to 55 mph, leading to more than 14,000 homes and businesses losing power at the peak of the storm. Most outages were resolved by the end of the day. A wind advisory was in effect for 21 counties until 10 p.m.
The strong winds also affected air travel, particularly at Newark Liberty International Airport. 316 flights were delayed at Newark, making it the most impacted airport in the New York area. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that some flights arriving at Newark were delayed by an average of 119 minutes.
In addition to the wind, NJ.com noted that parts of New Jersey experienced a mix of rain and snow, with a dusting of snow reported in northwestern counties. The National Weather Service warned of potential power outages and tree damage due to the high winds.
Despite the disruptions, flights at Newark resumed by 5:55 p.m. on Wednesday, following an earlier closure due to an aircraft emergency, as reported by NorthJersey.com. The Port Authority confirmed that flights continued to arrive and depart, although passengers were advised to check with their airlines for updates.
