Andy Kim is being sworn in today as a U.S. Senator for New Jersey, following the resignation of interim Senator George Helmy. Helmy was appointed after Bob Menendez resigned due to a federal corruption conviction. Kim, a Democrat, won the November election against Republican Curtis Bashaw.
Governor Phil Murphy announced Kim's early swearing-in to ensure a smooth transition. Kim, who has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2019, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent New Jersey, saying to The Hill, "It's an honor to get to represent the state that gave my family a chance at the American Dream in the U.S. Senate."
Kim's appointment marks a historic moment as he becomes the first Korean American elected to the U.S. Senate. Helmy, who served for three months, worked closely with Kim to facilitate the transition. Helmy's tenure included confirming 20 judicial nominations and resolving over 100 constituent cases.
Menendez's seat was vacated after he was found guilty on 16 charges in a corruption case, which he plans to appeal. Kim will serve the remaining weeks of Menendez's term and begin a full six-year term on January 3.
