New Jersey has experienced the largest population growth in the Northeast, according to new U.S. Census data. Since 2023, the Garden State has gained over 120,000 residents, marking a 1.3% increase. This growth brings New Jersey's population to more than nine and a half million, making it the 11th most populous state in the United States.
The state's population increase is part of a broader trend of growth that began after a decline of nearly 30,000 residents following the 2020 Decennial Census. As of July 2023, New Jersey's population had already increased by over 30,000 residents, surpassing previous forecasts. Governor Phil Murphy expressed pride in the state's growth, attributing it to efforts to create a stronger and fairer economy. He stated, "We are incredibly proud to see that New Jersey is among the top 10 states for population growth."
New Jersey's growth is also reflected in its job market. The state now boasts the largest number of jobs and employers in its history, with 4.4 million jobs and 284,200 employers as of late 2024. Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo emphasized the state's appeal, stating, "Workers want to be in New Jersey, and employers want to be where the workers are."
The state's dynamic business environment, top-rated schools, and strategic location contribute to its attractiveness for families, professionals, and businesses. Additional local growth data is expected in March with the release of County Population Estimates.
