The North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) is seeking public feedback for its new long-term plan, Connecting Communities. This plan will guide transportation investments and policies across 13 northern and central New Jersey counties over the next 25 years. The NJTPA launched an online survey earlier this week, available in six languages, to gather input from residents on future transportation needs and priorities.
Virtual public feedback sessions will begin on January 28, with the first meeting focused on creating a safe biking and walking transportation network. The NJTPA will also conduct pop-up outreach events throughout the region this spring to engage with the community.
Union County Commissioner Chairwoman Lourdes Leon emphasized the importance of public input, stating, "Your input is essential to creating a transportation system that supports the needs and aspirations of our diverse population."
The NJTPA oversees transportation planning for a region home to over 7 million people, with the population expected to grow to 7.8 million by 2050. The plan is crucial for maintaining eligibility for federal transportation funding, which supports over $3 billion in annual investments.
The NJTPA Board of Trustees, consisting of local elected officials and state agency representatives, is expected to adopt the plan in September. Residents are encouraged to participate in the survey and virtual events to share their ideas and concerns about the future of transportation in the region.
