The Hoboken PATH station will close for 25 days starting Thursday (January 30) at 11:59pm to undergo essential renovations. Port Authority officials have announced that the closure will last until February 25. During this period, crews will repair tracks, renovate the terminal, and replace switches damaged by salt water from Superstorm Sandy over a decade ago.
Clarelle DeGraffe, head of PATH for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, explained that the decision to close the station for a month was made to avoid a more prolonged disruption. "The work, it goes throughout the entire system, but unfortunately it’s going to bring disruption to our customers," DeGraffe said. "But we are executing a plan to try to mitigate that so that it minimizes the disruption as much as possible."
To accommodate the approximately 20,000 daily commuters affected by the closure, NY Waterway and NJ Transit will increase ferry, light rail, and bus services. The Port Authority will also provide free shuttle buses and additional PATH service from nearby stations.
This closure is part of PATH Forward, a $430 million, two-year plan aimed at improving speed and reliability across the PATH system. The Hoboken Terminal will reopen just in time for PATH's 117th anniversary, with further updates on the program expected in the coming months.
