Hundreds Of Popular Retail Stores Close Nationwide

Dollar General and Walgreens have reportedly combined to close hundreds of stores in recent months, according to Supermarket News.

The two stores accounted for the majority of the 82 total nationwide retail stores closed in the past month, with Dollar General closing 27 stores while opening nine and Walgreens shuttering 36 while opening one in January. Additionally, Walgreens closed 58 stores in November and 12 stores in December, while Dollar General shuttered five in the summer of 2024 and 22 in November, however, opened 61 in November and 55 in December.

Several other popular retailers have also experienced closing nationwide with Supermarket News listing the following openings and closings in January:

  • Albertsons: 1 opened
  • CVS: 3 closed
  • Dollar General: 9 opened; 27 closed
  • Dollar Tree: 2 opened; 4 closed
  • Giant: 1 closed
  • Rite Aid: 1 closed
  • Safeway: 1 closed
  • Save A Lot: 2 opened; 4 closed
  • Vons: 1 opened; 2 closed
  • Walgreens: 1 opened; 36 closed
  • Walmart: 3 closed
  • Whole Foods: 2 opened 

Dollar General is reported to have more than 20,000 locations in 48 states and territories and more than 7,700 cities, while Walgreens is reported to have more than 8,000 locations in 53 states and territories and more than 3,000 cities as of February 2025, according to ScrapeHero.
