The Garden State Parkway will soon be cashless

Last night the New Jersey Turnpike Authority voted unanimously to award a 900 million dollar contract to a company called TransCore of Nashville. The company has already been awarded a contract to design and build a cashless toll system for the Atlantic City Expressway. Now the company will also start the process of doing the same for the Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike. The goal is to have the Parkway completely cashless by Memorial Day 2025. Drivers along the New Jersey Turnpike might still have the option to pay cash. TransCore is looking into the possibility of building new toll plazas and retrofitting them with a pay cash option.

Close to 90 percent of Parkway drivers have E Z Pass now. Drivers who don't have E Z Pass will be sent a bill in the mail. One snag that still has to be worked out is how out of state drivers who don't use E Z Pass would pay. As of now New Jersey has no agreement with other states to force their drivers to pay toll bills that arrive in the mail. Driving to the shore on the Parkway will be a lot faster without those toll plazas. The only concern I have is more drivers falling asleep. One good thing about those toll plazas was stopping every 20 minutes kept some drivers (like me) awake.

Another ritual from our younger days bites the dust!
