Thousands of Horseshoe Crabs are invading New Jersey Beaches

The New Jersey Beaches along Delaware Bay are being invaded by tens of thousands of horseshoe crabs this week. The invasion will continue into early June. What is truly amazing about this is that it's been happening at this time for millions of years. Scientists believe these not so attractive creatures have been around for 400 million years! First female crabs come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand. Males follow them to fertilize the eggs. Then shore birds then feast on the eggs. Officials from the New Jersey Department of Parks and Forestry says warmer water temperatures signal the female horseshoe crabs to come ashore. Where they find soft wet sand for their eggs because of the full moon and high tide.
