It took 10 years and state grants totaling $287,000 but it has finally happened. The historic 100 year old fountain at Lake Hopatcong is gushing again. The valve was opened yesterday morning. It took 67 turns. Water started to slowly flow at first. Then increased in volume until it turned into a blast of water that reached an impressive 25 feet in the air.
Clearing the pipes and updating the mechanical equipment took years. Now up keep of the fountain is the responsibility of the State Division of Parks and Forestry. No one knows if the fountain will be left on all year or turned off during the winter. The fountain is located along the Musconetcong River in Hopatcong State Park.
