Plans to transform old St Paul's Abbey just took a big step forward

Back in 2012 the long empty St. Paul's Abbey on Route 206 in Andover was added to New Jersey's register of historic places. It's been empty and unused since the 1970's. Over the years the once beautiful and ornate interior has been looted and vandalized. Now there is hope for a new beginning as a destination wedding venue and hotel. The Sussex County Commissioners just approved Sigma Abbey LLC's application for a 50,000 gallon a day waste water treatment plant on the 350 acre site. The developer also plans to build over 100 townhomes and warehouses on the property. Sigma Abbey's next step is to bring more detailed plans to Andover Township's land use board. The abbey building itself is now 100 years old. Benedictine Monks built the original building in 1924. Over the next 40 years it was expanded several times. The monks moved to a more modern building across Route 206 in the 1970's.
